Storytelling Exercise:

Once upon a time, there was ________.

Every day, ________.

One day, ________.

Because of that, ________.

Until finally, ________.

Although a simple prompt, having a story structure gives you a great starting point. First, practice with the plot of your favorite movie, TV show, book, etc. Then, see how you can use this in your business' branding, marketing, pitching, etc. Remember that you are full of so many interesting stories!

Need Clarification?

I first hear about this storytelling framework in Austin Kleon's book Show Your Work!. In the same chapter, Kleon explains that a good pitch should include a past, present, and future. Think of it as having three acts, with an ending that leaves the audience (the person you are pitching to) wanting more.

  • Past:

    • Where you have been

    • What you want

    • How you came to want it

    • What you've done so far to get it

  • Present:

    • Where you are now

    • How you worked hard to get here

    • How you’ve used up most of your resources

  • Future:

    • Where you’re going

    • How the person you’re pitching to can help you there (i.e., how they can assist in resolving the cliffhanger)
